How Will You Get There?

Posted under Career Management, Career Planning on April 16th, 2007

In his book, “Discover the Wealth Within You: A Financial Plan for Creating a Rich and Fulfilling Life, ” Ric Edelman doesn’t start off by telling people how to get rich. Instead, he urges us to set goals. Somebody famous said it this way … Failing to plan is planning to fail.

That maxim is equally applicable to getting the career satisfaction. Without a 3–5 year career plan with you in the driver’s seat, you are giving control of your career to a company who in all likelihood cares more about its bottom line than about your need to provide for your family.

How do you answer these questions?

– What do you want your career to look like 5 years from now? Visualize your dream occupation and make it so real you can see it and feel it and know that it is within your reach.

– What quantifiable value do you bring to an organization?

– What are your career values, those things that you are not willing to compromise?

– What motivates you? What are the things you love to do and would do even if you did not get paid to do them?

This is the beginning of the career goal setting process. Once you’ve identified WHAT you want, it’s time to define HOW you will get there!

“All my life, I always wanted to be somebody. Now I see that I should have been more specific.” –Jane Wagner
