Summer: Great Time to Look for a Job

From Joan's Career & Leadership Blog. Posted under Job Search & Networking

Last night I spoke at Career Transition Connection at Woodbury Lutheran Church in Woodbury, MN. It's a job transition group, aka job search support group for those that are unemployed, underemployed, or simply looking for a new position at another company. It was nice seeing less people there than the last time I spoke several months ago. I take that as a positive sign that companies are starting to hire again. Summer is also a time when some folks slow down their job search. That brings up a good point- summer is an excellent time to actually ramp up your job search! Many folks with families take summer vacations which means less competition for those in an active job search. Continue Reading »

CFO Wiring

From Cindy Kraft the CFO-Coach. Posted under Career Management & Networking

Ernst & Young recently conducted a study of 669 senior finance professionals in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa focused on the DNA of a CFO. I’m wondering how much different these results would be if America had been included in the survey.

For example, our poll this week at SmartBrief for CFOs asks this question around a statistic pulled directly from the E&Y study: 73% of surveyed CFOs see their role as a destination. Only 10% aspire to be a CEO. What about you? Right now, the numbers are virtually tied. Register for the Brief and add your vote. Continue Reading »

Feel Passionate About Your Career

From Kevin. Posted under Networking & career transition

So you are thinking that it might be a good time to make a career change? The key reason for change for most people is the idea of being fulfilled with one’s work or it could have something to do with a certain time of your life, the state of the economy, or maybe even Continue Reading »

Everyone Can Build a Network

From The Career Doctor Blog. Posted under Networking

Carol writes: I believe that I have successfully described my “transferable” skills on my resume and in cover letters. I do not have a large network of friends or associates whom I can tap to help me. I have been posting resumes on company web sites when I see a job that catches my attention. I went to a couple of job fairs (no luck). I gave up on web sites such as, Monster or CareerBuilder. Continue Reading »

Networking: How to Remember Names

From Wendy Terwelp. Posted under Branding & Career Management & Interviewing & Job Search & Networking & Social Networking

Recently a friend told me he was at a block party. He talked with a guy who was an engineer, like my friend. They bonded over robotics. Then, my friend moved on to the next house. He talked with one of the people, another engineer, who happened to be in the market for a robotics expert. My friend said, “Man, I see how networking can work – if only I could have remembered the guy’s name, he could have had a job! All I could remember is that he had on funny pants and I didn’t think that would be too professional to mention.” Has that ever happened to you? All you are trying to remember is a name. You remember her face, you think, but the name escapes you. And, she’s not wearing a name tag either. (Who wears name tags at summer parties?) What’s in a name? It’s the one word that’s music to your listener’s ears. It you’re great with faces but have a tough time remember names, here are three tips excerpted from my book, “Rock Your Network® for Job Seekers:” Continue Reading »

Careers, Finance Executives, and Digital Footprints

From Cindy Kraft the CFO-Coach. Posted under Networking & Social Networking

Recently I had coaching sessions with two CFO clients who were considering offers. Both indicated the opportunities came to them through their digital footprint.

Last week, my interview on using social media to accelerate your finance career with Mary Ellen Slater of SmartBlog on Social Media hit the web.

This morning I came across Meg Guiseppi’s great post on the effectiveness of Linked In as an executive job search tactic.

Connect the dots and ... you get another blog post, on a topic I consider critically important for senior finance executives. Creating a digital footprint and then proactive managing your reputation is a necessary career management strategy today. Remember my high school girlfriend post last week?

How to Go about Expanding One’s Network

From The Career Doctor Blog. Posted under Networking

Ashley writes: I have read a lot about the potential of networking for people who are looking for a new job. One of my goals for this year is to expand my network because I want to consider finding a new job later in the year, but I really have no idea how to do it. I mean, I think I understand the concept of networking, but I just don’t know who to do it with, or how to find them. Can you help? Continue Reading »

Get Personal: Take Your Social Network Offline

From Rock Your Career. Posted under Branding & Career Management & Job Search & Networking & Social Networking

Courtesy of Springwise.com Long gone are the days when “online” was synonymous with social isolation. In fact, we’re now witnessing the opposite: technology is driving people to connect and meet up with others in the “real world”. This mass mingling makes for an interesting trend, begging to be turned into new services for consumers. Here are five such services: 1. MEETUP EVERYWHERE — Meetup’s new service, Meetup Everywhere, is an open and free platform that helps people build communities based on a common interest. Organisers can map offline gatherings and share announcements and updates through Facebook and Twitter accounts. One recent initiative: ReadyMade magazine partnering with Etsy.com to encourage DIY crafters to host local “craft-ups”. Continue Reading »
