Follow the Green Money: DOE Awards Penn State $122 Million to Study Energy Efficiency in Buildings, Kior Secures $75 Million for Biofuels, Zero Motorcycles Raises $1.2 Million

Greendollarsymbol_news The Department of Energy has awarded $122 million over five years to a team from Pennsylvania State University to study technologies that will make buildings more energy efficient.  Nearly 40% of energy use and greenhouse gas emissions are from buildings. Better building design is the goal of the researchers at this Energy Innovation Hub. Kior, a biofules company has secured a $75 million loan to build five plants in Mississippi that will convert wood chips to a substance similar to petroleum that can be refined like petroleum.  Three of the plants are expected to be built in the next three years.  Kior is headquartered in Pasadena, TX. Environmentally Smart Managers Getting Education at Community Colleges

According to the New York Times, there is a need for managers that can oversee the manufacturing,  technologies and materials that will be used to make energy use efficient and protect natural resources.  Community colleges across the country are responding to this need.  The graduates of these two year programs are in demand by utilites, cities, engineering firms, school districts and the military according to the article.  Of course before you begin any college or training program it is important to know how this will fit into your overall plan.  Finding your "niche" in the green economy is always the best first step to a successful career transition.

Follow the Green Money: Gevo Files for IPO, DOE Solicits Companies for Green Products, Samsung Invests in Nanosys

Greendollarsymbol_news Denver, CO based Gevo, a next generation biofuels developer, has filed for an initial public offering (IPO).  The company hopes to raise up to $150 million to continue research into developing isobutanol, a second generation biofuel.  They have career openings here.  Another biofuel maker, Solazyme, has received $52 million from investors to continue to develop its own algae-based biofuel. The Department of Energy announced a loan solicitation program for manufacturers of renewable energy components.  Companies involved in the manufacture of components for wind turbines, solar panels or energy storage devices are encourage to apply for a loan guarantee.  Up to $750 million will be available to pay credit subsidy costs as a result of this solicitation. Green Career Trends: Top 22 Green Power Cities, Green Data Center Investment Expected to Grow, Recycling Farm Land Into Solar Farms

Green Career Trends logo copy The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has released a list of the top 22 cities according to the amount of renewable energy they consume.  The cities are also divided by their size.  Factors the NRDC used when choosing the cities include: kilowatt-hour power consumption, fuel sources, has the city done a greenhouse gas inventory and do they have an energy conservation program in place. A report from Pike Research investment in more energy efficient data centers will be growing for the next five years from $7.5 billion to $41.4 billion in global revenue.  By investing in efficiency, companies will reduce costs and increase the bottom line as well as reduce carbon emissions.
