He Does Well in Accounting But Isn’t Happy in the Field

From The Career Doctor Blog. Posted under Career Coaching

Pete writes: I have been reading your past blog entries and would like to seek your advice. I have a post-secondary education in business, with a major in accounting and am also a credentialed accountant (i.e., CPA). After six years working in this field, I have done well in all the positions I have held and always have high praise from my managers/co-workers, but I find myself unhappy as most of the work does not interest me (i.e., either too easy for me or too stressful). Do you think a career change is the answer to my problem? Continue Reading »

Job Search Trends for 2010 and Beyond

From daisy. Posted under Career Coaching & Job Search & Resumes

In writing this article, I perused some popular career blogs and extracted some interesting job search and work trends that provide valuable insights and forecasts to help both job seekers and career practitioners stay ahead of the ever-changing world of work. Resumes: These will continue to become shorter, tighter and more laser-focused, according to one Career Thought Leader. Individuals who like to include their entire work history in a resume will now have to make sure to include only information that will entice the hiring manager to contact them for an interview. That job, way back when, that has no relation to your current focus, should not be included on your resume. LinkedIn has become the executive recruiter’s “passive database” to keep an eye on potential candidates. Continue Reading »

Career Coach Roundtable Session at Shulich School of Business

From daisy. Posted under Career Coaching & Recruiters & Resumes

I was one of seven coaches invited to participate in roundtable discussions on career related matters at Connect 2009 - The Annual Shulich Alumni Forum.   This Personal Coaching session was quite popular, and sold out prior to the event. Here I am with a captive MBA audience facilitating a discussion on Building Your Presence in the Social Media Era. Gist of the session included: Why Social Media?
  • The traditional approach to job search has changed
  • More competition for available jobs
  • More touch points for recruiters and job seekers
LinkedIn, for example, is one of the fastest-growing recruiting tools used by recruiters. It is a great source for finding candidates because it’s free and top professionals can be found there. Continue Reading »

When it Comes to Your Résumé, Focus is Key

From daisy. Posted under Career Coaching & Job Search & Resumes

One of my clients is currently in staffing, has a payroll background and wants me to tweak her résumé for a job in HR. I asked her to send me a sample HR job, so I can begin the work. She told me that I must use the résumé I have on file. That résumé is all about payroll. It occurred to me that many people are not aware that a one-size-fits-all résumé, especially if one is applying to a variety of positions even within the same industry, just does not work. As accomplished and qualified as you may be, if your résumé lacks focus and does not address the employer’s needs, it will be tossed in ‘File 13′, which is the garbage bin. You can have one résumé as your master, but be prepared to tweak it for each position. Continue Reading »

A Career Coaching Moment: Make 2010 Your Best Year Yet!

From daisy. Posted under Career Coaching

Usually at the start of a new year, many people make resolutions, and with all good intentions, but sadly, 97% of those who do so, never follow through. The reason for this is a lack of commitment and determination. It’s sounds great when they say it aloud “I am going to lose weight this year”, or “This is the year I will get the promotion I’ve always wanted”,  or  “This is the year I will write my book”, but that’s as far as it goes. Not a lot of thought goes into how’s it’s going to happen; what steps come first; who will hold them accountable, or what do they have to give up? Continue Reading »

Fireworks in the Brain

From JobHuntersBible Blog. Posted under Career Coaching

I've noticed something startling these past few months:  my brain has been experiencing a sprint of new ideas in almost every area of interest, that I have.  For a long time, I simply noticed this,  and enjoyed it.  I mean, my brain has always been active, but now it's superactive. And creative.  I'm coming up with new ideas, a mile a minute. If thoughts once came like an occasional firecracker in the brain, now it feels like continuous fireworks. Yesterday, it occurred to me to wonder why this was happening.  I am, after all, 82 years old; isn't the brain supposed to go into a slow decline by this point, with brain cells flicking off into space at an increasingly alarming rate?   Well, evidently not.  So, pondering why, I found myself talking to myself:  "what is different about your life, now, from, say, ten years ago?"  Instantly I knew the answer.   Continue Reading »

Your Career Management Plan: Born from Your Obituary

From Meg Montford. Posted under Career Coaching & Unsyndicated

Job seekers need to do more than dream to honor Dr. MLK

From Miriam Salpeter. Posted under Career Coaching & Unsyndicated

Dr. Martin Luther King offered many inspiring messages. As we honor him, it seems fitting to remember his message of hope. His “I Have A Dream” address was delivered in a time when most of his “dreams” really seemed to be just that. It’s important to recognize that having dreams isn’t enough. Dr. King and other leaders of the Civil Rights movement recognized that hard work and sacrifice was key to success. Thinking outside of the box, organizing peaceful marches…Civil disobedience. All of these at a great cost, but prepared and enacted with great hope. Every job seeker can take something away from these optimistic messages. Maybe the message is as simple as a reminder that hope is important, even when it is hard to muster. Maybe the more important take-away is that nothing worthwhile comes without hard work and effort. No matter the message, as the nation pauses to honor Dr. King, this is a good time for job seekers to stop and think about how to harness hope with hard work to move forward with an optimistic job hunt. Or, take another lesson from King and turn this day into a day of service and volunteer. It’s a great way to spend the holiday, with added benefits for job seekers. If YOU have a dream, but need help getting there, I can help with every part of your job hunt! Need a great resume? Tips to use social networking?
