Job Searching Requires Many Skills

From An Honest Day's Work. Posted under Career Management & Job Search & Networking

When it comes to our careers, we are advised to focus on our craft. We work hard to gain “resume building” experience that is important to our profession; we take professional development classes and seminars related to our chosen field; we might pursue a graduate degree to complement our work experience; and we practice, practice, practice our craft. And while it is important to be good at what you do and to have a resume that proves it, when it comes to an actual job search, you may find that you have to learn some new skills that are outside of your area of expertise, and possibly even outside of your comfort zone. JibberJobber.com is a Webware 100 Finalist (this is huge news)

From JibberJobber Blog. Posted under Internet Job Search

A few years ago my friends at emurse were recognized by Rafe Needleman fro CNet’s Webware.  Rafe is a big voice in the web 2.0, online space (webware is software for the web… get it?), and having a mention in an article he did was a big part of emurse getting some good traction in the market. Shortly after I saw the article I contacted Rafe with something like “hey, check us out - we’re cool too!Continue Reading »

Try and Get a Job…The Right Way

From BSafani. Posted under Career Management & Job Search & Networking

Seth Godin’s guest post, Don’t Try and Get a Job, on GL Hoffman’s What Would Dad Say blog suggests that you are better off starting your own business than trying to get a job. And this is exactly the advice I would expect from this unconventional marketing guru and author of such great books as Purple Cow and Small is the New Big. And I think the post contains sound advice for some. But I think there is a much bigger message in his post and my interpretation of it is that everyone in a job search needs to be either an entrepreneur or an “intrapreneur” and everyone needs to control their career destiny in order to achieve the best results. Since I advocate for job seekers looking to find their place inside a company, here are my observations on being a successful “intrapreneur” and better managing your career. Continue Reading »

Building Your Network, More Crucial Now Than Ever.

From Chesapeake Resume Writing Service. Posted under Networking

I had the opportunity to share some advice with job seekers on a local cable access station in my area today. The last question in the interview was what kind of advice would I give to serious job seekers. The first thing that came to mind was to tell job seekers to build their network. Continue Reading »

Early College Planning

From EduPlan. Posted under Career Planning

How early can we start planning for college? By Claudine Vainrub, MBA and Principal of EduPlan Many of us consider that starting to think about a college education is something to be looked at when students are in their senior years of high school. However, this is a myth, and it is most certainly not correct. It’s actually better to start plans and preparations for college much earlier. Actually the right time to being thinking about college is around the sixth or the seventh grade. Why? Continue Reading »

Sometimes, Seth Godin is Wrong

From Blue Sky Resumes Blog. Posted under Job Search

It pains me to write that sentence. I love Seth Godin. I’ve read all his books and I once spent a fascinating day at one of his seminars. I have learned tons of things about marketing my business from Seth Godin. But every time he writes about finding a job, I just cringe. Because, as a died-in-the-wool entrepreneur who hasn’t looked for a job in decades, Seth just doesn’t understand job seekers or the job search process. I say this with love - truly I do - but when it comes to job search advice, Seth Godin is clueless. Continue Reading »
